Discussion: Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice

One of the keys to improving quality of care to patients is through EBP projects. There has been a large movement to push towards providing care that is based off of EBP. There are many different ways that that information can be disseminated.

Two possible dissemination strategies:

There are number of different ways to get your information out after doing an EBP project. One way is to create and distributing program materials such as flyers, guides, and pamphlets. (Rural Health Information Hub, n.d.) Another way to is create a toolkit for nurses that contain training material. (Rural Health Information Hub, n.d.) I would choose to use either of these two options because I feel like it is the best way for me to get information out on a unit level. The information contained in these two options would be condensed and more likely for the nurses on the unit to read it since it would not be a presented in an article.

Two strategies I would not use:

Out of the multiple different ways to disseminate information from an EBP project, there are a few that I would most likely not use. First, I would not choose presenting at a conference. (Rural Health Information Hub, n.d.) Second, I would not choose to host a health promotion event. (Rural Health Information Hub, n.d.) My preference to not use these two options are mainly because I am not a fan of public speaking. I do believe that these are good ways to get your information out to a large number of people and depending on what information you are presenting they might be the best options.

Barriers to dissemination:

There can be a lot of different barriers to disseminating your information. Melnyk (2012) pointed out that the lack of leadership or organizational support and perceived lack of time are two barriers to disseminating your knowledge from an EBP project. An organizational culture of EBP is central to supporting sustainable high-quality evidence based. (Melnyk, et al., 2011) Without having the support of your leadership and organization, it will be hard to get your information out and if you are able to do that, most likely you will not be supported by them. Lack of their support will cause your changes to not come to focus on the unit. Another barrier is lack of an EBP mentorship. (Melnyk, 2012). An EBP culture that includes EBP mentors is necessary in order to advance and sustain EBP in individuals and health care systems. (Melnyk, et al., 2017)

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is key to improve patient outcomes. Most of these EBP data will take decades to translate into action on the field, (Melnyk, 2012). It is imperative as nurses and nurse leader to take the role and implement and teach that EBP.

The two dissemination strategies I would be inclined to use are unit-level presentations and sharing information via social media (Rural Health Information Hub, 2017). I believe these two methods would amplify and reach my audience as social media is part of everyday like to most people I know. This could include short information segments, education tips, and so forth. Unit-level presentations would be a great opportunity to include the staff that works with the patient on a regular basis. Targeted information could be given and taught.

Two dissemination strategies I would stay away at this time would be creating and distributing program materials, such as handouts and podium presentations at the national level ((Rural Health Information Hub, 2017). In my opinion, program materials end in the trash when handed out without a presentation. As far as podium presentations at a national level, I feel they are something a unit director or administrative director can accommodate with the information provided by staff.

Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2015) discuss in a EBP Exemplar that one of the most common barriers to dissemination is the lack of participation with clinicians as they have acculturated to their methods and ways of doing things. They will resist the information and most importantly, change. Patient outcomes have been linked to nurses’ performance, and nurse’s performance and decisions affect and are affected by quality (Melnyk, 2015). Nurses need to work together to improve patient care and all the components that lead to that improvement.
